“So for all you leaders out there, let this pull you to the edge of your seat.  When you pull up to work, or when you get ready to hit ‘play’ on the Zoom, or go live on the Zoom or Google Hangout, you need to say, ‘Wait a second, am I ready to win the caring game, today, with the people that are helping make me and this organization look good?’  And if not, you better take thirty seconds and say, ‘I gotta get my s*** straight, because it’s not straight right now,’” says Yancy Culp, co-host of the DEKA Series Podcast.

Spartan Up Podcast, DEKA Series hosts Jarod Cogswell and Yancy Culp get passionate about what makes a good leader and how that impacts your team. In this episode you’ll learn:

  • What great leaders practice
  • Culture of care
  • Importance of communication and authentic engagement

Coach Frank McKinney, one of the first Black college rugby coaches in the US, says "I didn't get into coaching to win games.  My thing is to make young men better."  It turns out those are also the ingredients of a winning team.

Joe De Sena, founder and CEO of Spartan, interviews coach Frank McKinney and critically acclaimed filmmaker Thomas Morgan about the new film "Scrum" and the incredible story behind it.

Listen for the inspiring story, or for coach Frank's great coaching advice and insights.  "I tell the players, the kind of dog I need is the dog that's in the junkyard, with the tire swing in the old Roy dog food. And he has a little bit of water. You don't want to put your hand through that fence. But the border collie you put your hand through the fence and pet. So I tell the kids no matter where they come from, I need junkyard dogs out there playing that's for us to be successful for us to win. You've got to be a junkyard dog on the field, in the classroom and in life."

He strives to bring diversity to a predominantly white Southern institution through recruiting athletes from marginalized communities. Coach McKinney is an advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion within higher education and uses his position as a rugby coach to create opportunities, mentorship, and resources for at-risk youth to help them see themselves access and succeed in college and beyond.

And she always put an adventure on her calendar so that when she was going through her chemo, she wasn’t just a cancer patient, she was a mountaineer in training, or she was, you know, training for her next adventure race or ultra run,” says Robyn Benincasa regarding her friend, Louise.

This week, we’re continuing our Classics with some conversations that help us understand how to live life in a way that makes us happier. In this episode you’ll learn…

“The original goal was to try to become the first NFL player to ever climb the Seven Summits, and when that got pushed out a year, I said, ‘You know what? I’m going to double down. And I’m going to not only go up and climb Mt. Everest, I’m going to come back down, and then I’m going to go up the other side,’ which is Lhotse, the fourth highest mountain in the world. And, at the end of the day, that didn’t happen because I would have died on Lhotse,” says Mark Pattison, former NFL player who just conquered the Seven Summits.

Mark Pattison has played professional football, is an Executive at Sports Illustrated, and the 1st NFL player to climb the Seven Summits. In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • Competitive greatness
  • Having a “big hairy audacious goal”
  • Healing by being connected with nature
  • Adjusting to the elements to reach a goal instead of changing the goal

On top of all this, he has a documentary presented by NFL 360 coming out TONIGHT, 9/23, “doors” open at 7:30 PM Central Time, and the film starts at 8:00.

When it feels like all hope is lost, how do you come back? Heard of the "Varsity Blues" college admission scandal? Have you asked yourself what happened next? How a family recovers? What’s next after jail after losing his career? That’s what Joe De Sena  and Gordon Caplan talk about in this second half of their interview.

Gordon Caplan was one of those parents, and he tells Joe De Sena (CEO & Founder of Spartan) exactly what he was thinking, and what he learned from the experience and the deep thinking he did in jail. Every parent of a high school-age kid, and grandparents ... and anyone who works with them in school needs to listen closely to the lessons here.  In part one of this interview, you'll hear what exactly happened, how it happened, why it happened, and what is wrong with the way 90% of the parents out there are thinking about their kids.  Next week we publish part two, that's where you'll hear you can come back from even the most devastating blow.

“There are fishermen…that go out swimming, with nets, they don’t even have a boat. They’ll go out with nets in crocodile infested waters. And they’re like, ‘Well, we don’t have a choice, I can’t afford a boat, I need to eat, my family needs to eat,’” says Levison Wood, explorer who walked almost the entire Nile River in one go.

We’re continuing our Classics with some conversations that tell us about the uncharted places in the world that many of us haven’t even considered visiting. These explorers literally risked their lives to do what they’ve accomplished. In this episode you’ll learn…

  • How Levison Wood walked from Rwanda to Egypt along the Nile River, trekking deserts, swamps, and warzones
  • Shannon Galpin’s stories from Afghanistan, the prisons, and how she’s helped Afghan women push for more freedom

“Well you know, this was a man who, at the time, I was contemplating, ‘How do I stop today? I can’t move on, I can’t get to the end. I have a fractured leg, something’s wrong. I’m in so much pain. How can I possibly get to land’s end?’ And then you get this card… what do you do? I did what anybody else would do and I made a promise to that lady that I would get to the other side,” says Tony the Fridge.

We’re back with two more awesome throwbacks. We kick it off first with Chris Legh, you may remember him stumbling across the finish line at the 1997 Hawaii Ironman. His story is amazing when you hear the mentality he had during that infamous race. The second half is Dr. Delle’s heartwarming and inspiring conversation with Tony “The Fridge,” someone who literally runs with a fridge on his back to raise money for cancer research. In this episode you’ll learn…

  • How your mind and spirit can push your body past its limits
  • The importance of pushing through for others
  • Live in the moment and stay focused. You can do anything if you put your mind to it. Can you carry a fridge the length of England? YES!

“You know, I’m sure you’ve heard that old adage of, I guess it’s credited to Winston Churchill, when he gets up to speak about accomplishment...three lines he says, ‘Never give up. Never give up. Never give up.’ And I think that, without question, is the key,” says Will Roseman, Executive Director of the legendary Explorer’s Club.

In this episode, we take a look back at two original Spartan Up! interviews published in 2015.  The episode begins with Will Roseman telling Joe De Sena the stories of the legendary members of the Explorer’s Club, and ends with Dr. Delle’s conversation with Sir Ranulph Fiennes, the world’s greatest living explorer. In this episode you’ll learn…

  • The importance of perseverance and assessing risk (Apollo 13)
  • The outside of the box thinking and extraordinary knowledge that explorers have (Fighting a leopard, hunting a man eating tiger, using feces as a chisel)
  • Overcoming fear (Even the world’s greatest explorer is afraid of heights)
  • How Sir Ranulph Fiennes, without doctors, survived a heart attack during a climb on Everest and later cut off his own fingers at his home
  • To surmount obstacles, have a cup of tea and figure out how to go around them.

“...Weight loss is hard, you know? There’s so much information out there telling you how you should live your life, to lose weight. So many fad diets, it’s pretty hard to sift through. But I would say the most important thing, and running has also taught this to me, is you need to fuel your body for the life you live,” says Kyle White, running enthusiast who has lost 185 pounds over the pandemic and through a grueling Eastern Canada winter.

Filling in for Johnny Waite while he’s organizing Spartan races in Canada, guest Spartan Up Endurance series host Sarah Goldman talks with Kyle White about his amazing weight loss journey and how he has continued to push himself from being over 400 pounds to planning marathons. In this episode you’ll learn about…

- Learning to like the challenges in fitness
- Advantages of training in the winter
- How to stay motivated and inspired
- How losing weight leads to changes in other aspects of life
- Having the necessary attitude for endurance, understanding what your body needs, and how it reacts

Kyle White is an inspiration for anyone who is looking to lose weight or reconnect to their love for running.

“When you exercise, your brain is receiving signals from your body that really tell you who you are and what you’re capable of. So when we talk about exercise boosting confidence or being empowering, sometimes we think about it very abstractly, but I think about it very literally,” says Kelly McGonigal, PhD.
Kelly McGonigal is an award-winning Stanford lecturer, health psychologist, author, and public speaker. We continue our conversation, but this time about resilience relating to happiness and positivity. In this episode, you’ll learn:
• How feeling connected and having something to offer to your community builds compassion, happiness, and resilience

• Why working out in a group is shown to be the best for improving your mood

• Finding empowerment through exercise to figure out what you’re capable of and to build resilience

• Having pure intentions when coaching others

• No matter how bad your day is going, anyone taking the time to listen to you may be having it worse, so show up for them!

“Listen, some people are whooped right now. Wag your tail, find what's good in your life. Find gratitude, what's going on. Write it down. Because the one thing, when I come home, good day or bad day, and there are days that are bad and I'm tired and everything else, or come home from a trip and it didn't go the way I wanted, or back's hurting or something like that. Guess what? I'm coming home to a waggin' tail,” says Todd Durkin, Motivational Speaker, Personal Trainer, Best Selling Author and Life Transformer.

Jarod and TD went a bit off topic during the Life Fueled by Fitness series and talked about some other essential practices we need to be utilizing everyday.  JC and Yancy also give us a great rundown on how Todd actually walks the talk.  This episode is about finding those things to be grateful for and to “wag your tail” no matter the circumstances.  In this episode, you’ll learn about:

  • Getting your energy flowing and getting juiced up

  • Following your dreams

  • The value of time

  • Being the hardest worker in the room

  • And last but not least, always wag your tail

“For me, for the younger guys, I don't care where you're from. If you're an Iowa guy, right, we 'don't like each other,' but as soon as you get on my team, you're on my team. Right? I want to take care of you. And so that's what's exciting for the young guys that want to come in and fight is that, you know, wrestlers are gonna look out for each other. It doesn't matter where you're from. All that's done, behind us. It'd be fun to see these guys, see more guys that don't want to be done competing, and also don't want to wrestle, come over and start climbing the ranks in the MMA world,” says Logan Storley, #4 Ranked Bellator Welterweight and 4X All American for University of Minnesota.

Spartan Up Combat Series host, Ryan Warner, talks with Logan Storley about taking the leap from wrestling into MMA. In this episode you’ll learn...

  • How Logan transitioned from wrestling to MMA

  • There's no need to burn out your kids on a single sport when they're young

  • If you want to make a career out of combat but don’t want to keep wrestling, switch to MMA

  • Don’t overlook any person or any move

  • Wrestling programs and fan bases are expanding, we talk about some ways to get more people involved in the sport. Why aren’t there as many wrestling fans as MMA fans?

Logan “Storm” Storley is a top contender in the Welterweight division at Bellator, and he has a long history of wrestling and MMA going back to before he was in college.  He has trained with legends like Tony Ferguson, Robbie Lawler, Brock Lesnar, and many of the best from the University of Minnesota.  He is a fighter for Sanford MMA, coached by Greg Jones and Henri Hooft.

What made him the competitor he is today? Today we're replaying an interview from 2014 so you can see what drove this Olympian. It's a mix of positivity, focus and drive.

“I don’t think about losing. I think about winning every time I step on the mat. I imagine myself wrestling the greatest wrestler of all time and beating him every single day. That’s just how  I get myself better every single day,” says Kyle Dake, Team USA 74 kg wrestler and 4x NCAA Champion.

Today’s episode is a throwback to an interview that Joe did with Kyle in 2014. Kyle, at this time, was striving to be the greatest. It’s amazing to see how far he has come by living with these expectations and standards he holds for himself. Wednesday, August 4, 2021, is his Olympic debut.

In this episode, you’ll learn…

• The impact Kyle’s parents had on him, and his eventual decision to live by their values on his own
• Taking action to excel and committing to being the best
• No matter what your work or practice, find something to be happy about
• “You can only lose when you quit.”
• Pushing through what you think are the hardest times so you can keep pushing the “wall” holding you back

Save the fun for later, don’t be afraid to get in the ring, don’t fear discomfort - it’s all familiar advice but did you expect it from the founder of Click Funnels the sales funnel software giant?  It turns out that success in one arena shares traits with other arenas.  Russell Brunson tells Joe stories of his backyard training as a kid, where it led him, and how he’s returning to those roots today.

Over the past 19 years, Russell has built a following of over a million entrepreneurs, sold hundreds of thousands of copies of his books (making him a New York Times Bestselling Author), popularized the concept of sales funnels, and co-founded the software company called ClickFunnels that helps tens of thousands of entrepreneurs quickly get their message out to the marketplace.

When do you take risks, when do you play it safe?  It turns out it's not one or the other.  Sukhinder Singh Cassidy talks with Spartan founder and CEO Joe De Sena about the importance of risk-taking, and suggests using a series of choices and risks to create better outcomes.

One simple formula - if your FOMO is bigger than your fear of failure, you're going to take action.  If your fear of failure is greater than your FOMO you're not going to take action.  To overcome this, Sukhinder Singh Cassidy suggests steps to reduce the fear of failure.

Sukhinder Singh Cassidy is a leading technology executive and entrepreneur, board member, and investor with twenty-five years of experience founding and helping to scale companies, including Google and Amazon. Most recently, she served as president of StubHub and as a member of eBay’s executive leadership team. She is the founder and chairman of theBoardlist and author of Choose Possibility.

“It's not wrestlers that have done well in MMA or are doing well in MMA. That is historically false. It is American wrestlers. Specifically because of the takedown. Knowing to hold a man down against his will, or vice versa, you get taken down, force it to get up and get free with a guy on top of you who's a trained killer who doesn't want you free. The standup and the ride is what separates. That's the toughness,” says Chael Sonnen, UFC Light Heavyweight and Middleweight championship contender and NCAA Division I All-American.

Spartan Up Combat Series host, Ryan Warner, talks with Chael Sonnen about reaching greatness and maximizing your career in combat sports. In this episode you’ll learn...

  • How Chael got into wrestling, and then pankration, the original MMA

  • The importance of having a great coach like Matt Lindland and ditching the stigma against Greco

  • If Chael thinks any rules should be changed in freestyle or folkstyle

  • How to market yourself as a wrestler

They explain the metabolic benefits, some basic first steps, and some simpler ways to think about your eating.

As a kid did you run around for the fun of it? You were probably stronger than you think. Can you get back in touch with that feeling? Who needs motivation when you are just having a great time? Barefoot Ted was one of the unintentional stars of Christopher Mcdougal's book "Born to Run," and the originator of Luna Sandals.

Spartan Up Endurance Series host, Johnny Waite, talks with Barefoot Ted about how we can get outside and be happy with whatever fitness you choose out there. In this episode you’ll learn about:

The adventure that showed Ted the kind of life he wanted to live
How to get back to the fundamental roots of exercise
Learn to take advantage of your natural tools
Why experimenting is the key to your fitness
Micro-Dosing exercise
The difference between practice & performance

“There's practice, which is much more about just this daily hygienic care of yourself. That should be relatively easy to stay in, because it's self-- it's self satisfying. Performance sometimes takes a kind of discipline, self-discipline, maybe scheduling, some much more analytical and somewhat rigid sort, if you want to get the results that performance will give you. Practice is ultimately leading, its only goal is wellbeing,” says Ted McDonald, aka Barefoot Ted, from “Born to Run” and founder of Luna Sandals.

In 2014 this conversation with Richard Branson was one of Joe De Sena's first Spartan Up interviews. Branson explained why he had the vision to travel to space.  At the time he expected to make the journey by the end of that year. We all know a few months later many expected Branson to give up on the dream.

This is an interview about character, resilience, grit, and fitness.  What is it about Richard Branson that allowed him to see this mission through?  They say success leaves clues, what clues can you find in this 2014 conversation?

“Stop worrying about what other people think about you. You know, those very first steps you take, as a runner, when you feel stupid, when you feel you have no right to be there, you’re maybe feeling...you’re in kind of baggy running kit, and overweight, and don’t really know what you’re doing. And you’re so paranoid that people are going to see you. I know women that have gone running in the dark, to start with, because they didn’t want anyone else to see,” says Dr. Juliet McGrattan, award-winning author and Founder of 261FearlessClubUK.

Spartan Up Podcast, DEKA Series hosts’ Jarod Cogswell and Yancy Culp take their next step with part 2 of their new 4 part mini-series, Winning the Mind Game.  During this mini-series, the guys will address overall well-being and how to unlock the doors holding us back in our minds. This episode is about being bold. In this episode you’ll learn about:

  • Juliet’s journey: Leaving behind medicine and her career as a General Practitioner to focus on her passion of running, while still helping people live healthily

  • People’s transformations of confidence and fitness through the initiatives of 261 Fearless

  • Differences between men and women dissolving when it comes to endurance

  • Digging deep to find out why you want to run in the first place and staying consistent

“When things wrap around in our head all the time, and it’s not something we write down, it can play mind games with us. I mean, talk about bumping up your mental game, right? It’s why journaling can be so useful. Because when you take what’s in your head and you put it in your hand, you can really begin to evaluate, like, ‘Oh, is what I'm thinking in my head reasonable? Oh my gosh, this is the most unreasonable thing on the planet,’'' says Dr. Lara Pence, clinical psychologist, and chief mind doctor at Spartan.

“Usually people are reactive because they’ve got an injury and really they should be addressing it beforehand,” says Dave Scott, 6x Ironman World Champion.

Spartan Up Endurance Series host, Johnny Waite, talks with Dave about the best formula for nutrition + strength for endurance athletes.  In this episode, you’ll learn...

-Never skip a strength or mobility workout, even if it means sacrificing a run, bike or swim

-What is strength and why it’s important for the endurance athlete

-Dave’s current philosophy on nutrition

-What foods to avoid when training

-You can’t eat as many fruits and vegetables as you want

Dave Scott is known as the Roger Bannister of triathlons as the first person to go under 10 hours at Kona.  In 1980, Dave Scott went to the island of Oahu to race the third ever Ironman Triathlon. In both 1978 and 1979, there were 15 starters and 12 finishers. After an article on the event appeared in Sports Illustrated in the spring of 1979, the number of entries ballooned up to 108 in 1980, which would be the last year the event was held on Oahu. Dave Scott was an unknown that day in February of 1980, but after ABC’s Wide World of Sports showcased Dave’s journey around the island of Oahu where he led the entire day and broke the existing course record by nearly two hours, that changed pretty quickly. In many sports, the winners from the early years quickly become yesterday’s news as faster athletes bypass the trailblazers. Not Dave Scott. He was the Roger Bannister of triathlon. Over the next 16 years he won five more Ironman World Championship titles, became the first athlete to go under 3:00 hours for the Ironman marathon, then the first to go under 2:55 and the first to go under 2:50.

Sebastian Junger, author of "The Perfect Storm," "War," and "Tribe" has a new book called "Freedom." There's at least one simple truth about freedom, the more discomfort you'll accept in your life, the more options you have. As Sebastian Junger says:

"If you have to take a shower every day, you will never be able to spend the night in the woods. Right? I mean, that's just a loss of voluntary loss of freedom. If you refuse to be hot or cold or hungry or tired or what have you, you really have to live your life in the sort of confines of a modern American lifestyle that is very free in some ways, but also creates a kind of dependency in almost everyone that is the opposite of freedom."

SEBASTIAN JUNGER is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of THE PERFECT STORM, FIRE, A DEATH IN BELMONT, WAR, TRIBE and his newest book, FREEDOM (2021). As an award-winning journalist, a contributing editor to Vanity Fair and a special correspondent at ABC News, he has covered major international news stories around the world and has received both a National Magazine Award and a Peabody Award. Junger is also a documentary filmmaker whose debut film "Restrepo," a feature-length documentary (co-directed with Tim Hetherington), was nominated for an Academy Award and won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance.

“Release your ego from the outcome,” says Olympian Ben Askren.

This episode of the Spartan Up Combat Series is hosted by Joe De Sena and Colonel Nye, as they talk with Ben about reducing fear, the ego and how to live with no regrets. In this episode, you’ll learn...

-The value of hard work: Ben only took off 7 days during his entire high school career

-Ego and the impact on stress

-How to become unstoppable by creating a niche

-Planning vs following a plan and when to adhere to each

-Three actions you can take to reduce performance-related fear

About Ben

Ben Askren grew up in Hartland, Wisconson. He was introduced to wrestling age six by his father but didn't take the sport seriously until joining a wrestling club in fifth grade. From there, Ben's love for the sport and success within it hit new levels.

Ben reached high school and dominated his weight class at a state level.

In 2002, he joined the University of Missouri, a team that had just claimed it's first NCAA Big 12 title (thanks to future friend and fellow MMA fighter Tyron Woodley). Here Ben would help the program reach new levels. His NCAA career consisted of a 157-8 overall record. His final two years were dominant with an 87-0 record capped by back-to-back national championships (2006 & 2007). Ben was a four-time all-American, and two-time recipient of the Dan Hodge Trophy (the college wrestling equivalent of the Heisman).

His next big accomplishment was defeating the national runner-up Tyrone Lewis at the US Olympic Trials in Las Vegas to secure a spot on the 2008 US Olympic Team. In Beijing, Ben competed in the 74 kg. weight class, where he would open his first match with a win via pin. Ben was eliminated in the following round with a loss to Cuba's Ivan Fundora.

Last week we talked about blue scorpion venom, today we're keeping it super simple. Eat more plants.  It's not just Joe De Sena telling you it matters - today self-proclaimed meat and potatoes guy Dr. Alan Desmond, author of "The Plant Based DIet Revolution" explains the positive impacts more plants can have on your health and performance, and why you might be hearing ads that tell you otherwise.

Dr Alan Desmond is on a mission to help people eat more plants! As a Gastroenterologist he knows that our health can be optimised by building all of our meals, or most of them, from the simple whole-foods that humans have thrived on for generations: fruits, vegetables, wholegrains, beans, legumes, nuts and seeds. His book "The Plant-Based Diet Revolution: 28 days to a happier gut and a healthier you" is released in the US on April 20th, available wherever books are sold. It explains the science, cuts through the diet confusion and contains more than 80 fantastic plant-based recipes to get you started.
