The Hard Way w/ Joe De Sena

Doug Lewis, Olympian and former World Cup alpine ski racer, says, “If I could stand in the starting gate, 3,000 vertical feet above that finish, knowing that I am going to risk my life. But, if I had the confidence to push myself out there, and attack the course, more than I know the course is going to attack me, I have the upper hand on that course. And I know I can do it.”

Today, Yancy and Jarod talk with Doug about the mindset you must have to be the absolute best at whatever you’re trying to accomplish. In this episode, you’ll learn:

- Preparation and Visualization
- Recovering from a broken back at 17
- 3 traits of a World Class skier: Love for speed, work ethic, look at failure as a gift
- Finding the positivity in everything, regardless of the outcome
- Find what’s possible for yourself
- Figuring out what went right and wrong, and don’t shy away from looking at whoever is doing best to see what they’re doing better

Doug Lewis, Olympian and founder of Eliteam, is currently an alpine ski racing broadcast analyst, but he used to be a top competitor in the 1980s.  Doug was on the 1984 and 1988 Olympic Alpine Team, and 2 World Championship Teams in 1985 and 1987. At the 1985 World Championships, Doug won the bronze medal, which was the first ever World Championship medal for an American in downhill. He was the 1986 & 1987 U.S. Nationals National Downhill Champion. Inducted in 2002 VARA Ski Hall of Fame, 2007 US National Ski & Snowboard Hall of Fame, and 2019 Vermont Ski & Snowboard Hall of Fame.

“Find your inner beast, okay? Attack life. Punch fear in the face. It’s going to make you stronger. You know, be safe doing what you’re doing out there, we’re not talking about being reckless. But face your fears and punch through them. Man, the other side of it is such a beautiful place,” says Jarod Cogswell, co-host of the DEKA Series and Co-Creator of Spartan DEKA.

Today Yancy and Jarod are talking about how we can find that animal inside of us that we don’t know exists until we go through tough times. In this episode, you’ll learn about:

How to embrace the suffering and know that you can find what it takes to get through it
The gift of having these experiences to reflect on
We need something to kick us in the a** so we keep pushing our abilities
Crushing the ordinary in your life
The beauty after being challenged

Chris Herren, Joe Polish, and Ray Morvan tell us their experiences and give us advice to help battle our own addictions.

“You know, I have children, I have a 19 year old son, I have a 16 year old daughter, and a 10 year old. And you know, my thing is, go to parties. Be social. But why get drunk?” says Chris Herren.

Joe asks, “Because they’re going to do it anyway aren’t they?”

Chris says, “No, why? That’s my point. See, you’re one of the parents that have made the assumption and waved the flag that that’s going to happen. But why? Why assume that? And why not do things to prevent it?”

In this episode, we talk about how to help beat addiction before or after it’s already begun. In this episode you’ll learn about…

- Having the awareness that you don’t need substances. Figuring out why we get addicted and how to beat it before it starts
- Recognizing when you’re in a bad environment and getting yourself out
- The link between trauma, how you relieve that stress, and addictions
- Finding another activity that keeps you off drugs and alcohol to help you realize your journey to become a better version of yourself

Andrew Simpson says, “We can have both. We can have high success, we can have winners that do get the scholarship and that actually enjoy it along the way. We just need a new paradigm and some new strategies along the way.”

Today, Yancy and Jarod talk with Andrew about how we can improve our mentoring and stop ourselves from being too hard so the youth can continue having fun. In this episode, you’ll learn:

- Focusing on who a student athlete becomes, their happiness, health, and well-being instead of their stats
- Key areas we’re going wrong as coaches to kids
- Stop looking for the wrong things to base how someone’s doing
- 5 techniques for coaches and parents to help their kids be their best (and to be a better coach in general)
- How to get the youth more active beyond sports

Andrew Simpson is a husband, a father, a Founder of a company called Player’s Fitness and Performance, and the creator of the Winning Athlete Formula. A system that helps kids and adults alike become high-performing leaders without sacrificing values, health, or relationships along the way. He is also the author of a best selling book called The Youth Truth: a movement helping parents and coaches build true champions in today’s crazy youth sports world.

“Let's say my wife is fit and my kids are fit, and here I am, rolling into my fifties, and they want to go do something. I'll be damned if I-- if I have not respected myself. Through my 20s, 30s, 40s, and 50s, I'm going to be forced. My body is going to say no dumb a**. You can't do that anymore. That would crush me. And I know people, listen and I know you listen and viewers, you're thinking, that might be where I'm at right now. We're not saying it's too late. We'll start today,” says Yancy Culp, co-host of the DEKA Series and Co-Creator of Spartan DEKA.

Beau Miles, the Backyard Adventurer, poly-jobist, Doctor of Philosophy, author, is back to tell us about how he fuels himself on his days-long journeys.

“If it's days and days at a time, and the slower you're going, and you're doing that longer burn where your heart rate's ticking along at 130 the whole time, and you're not really stopping, you're always moving. I'm basically just eating normally, whatever way I can. That decides, you know, I'll have a sandwich, I'll have some licorice, I'll have some dates, I'll have lots of dried fruit and nuts, and some salty potatoes or an egg. I'll just bloody eat anything,” says Beau Miles.

In this episode, you’ll learn:

- Trust your body to tell you what you want and crave
- How Beau is eating on his long expeditions
- How eating only beans for 40 days and then running an Ultra Marathon ended Beau’s cravings
- The key companion is yourself. Listen to what your body and mind are telling you

Don't ask how long you'll live.  Ask how long you'll be HEALTHY enough to enjoy life. What if you assessed your body by what it can DO rather than what it looks like or how long it will last? Is this the start of a newer, better fitness KPI?

Joe De Sena, founder & CEO of Spartan, talks with friend, trainer, and wrestling coach Mike Palazzo about the state of fitness and basic steps anyone can take to make improvements. Including the 6x around the car, take every stair and put the groceries on the shelf workout.

Beau Miles, the Backyard Adventurer, poly-jobist, Doctor of Philosophy, author, doer and self-described oddball, is an inspiration to those of us looking to discover adventure in our lives to turn our ordinary into extraordinary. Johnny Waite talks to him about the ways we can make our exercise fun without worrying about time or other unnecessary external factors.

“Well everyone’s got a body metric, right? With, ‘How much I weigh, how much I run, how fast I do it, how good I feel, how much sleep I’ve had, how much creatine powder I’ve put in my drink.’ You know, it’s all very measured. And I'm completely not that way. I've never been a Strava person or a measurement person. I just go on feel and whatnot. Which is still quite strategic. But it's just not as number driven, I suppose.” says Beau Miles.

In this episode, you’ll learn:

- The love for going long on your journey and discovering the world
- Enjoying the element of the unknown and fixing things along the way
- How to find adventure close to home
- The Backyard Adventurer philosophy
- You’re next adventure doesn’t have to be extreme for you to test yourself and have fun

Brian Nunez, IDEA World Fitness Personal Trainer of the year in 2019 and owner of FNS Training Center, talks to us about how your purpose drives you the hardest, not just your passion.

“If people are having a tough time and struggling with it, ‘I hate social media, my engagement is down, this is set.’ It's like, because that's exposing the truth of what it's really about for you. It's about the applause. It's not about the cause. And it's a wakeup call for people,” says Brian Nunez, author, coach, and founder of FNS (Fitness Never Sleeps) Training Center.

Today, Yancy and Jarod talk with Brian about being driven by your purpose. In this episode, you’ll learn:

- The passion that separates coaches from athletes
- “Attention is our greatest asset”
- Passion doesn’t keep you in the fight, your purpose does. You have to be passionate about that purpose.

Sarah Wilson and Josh Clemente break down the impact of sugar in our diet and how to reduce our dependence on it.

“I don’t have the numbers off the top of my head, but it’s something like, we’re now eating 100 pounds of sugar per year, per person, and previously it was, I think, on the order of 1-3 pounds…it’s essentially two orders of magnitude higher now than it was 150 years ago,” says Josh Clemente, founder of Levels.

In this episode, we talk about the benefits of cutting down, or even completely cutting out sugar from our diet. In this episode you’ll learn about…

- Switching the mindset to “What we could eat,” and other ways to change mindset like treating it as an experiment
- Recalibrating your appetite
- How to improve metabolism and how your body responds to sugar
- Getting energy from healthy fats so we’re not reliant on glucose
- Listen to your body and make better choices from it

Amy Culp, RD, CSSD, LD, CEDRD, tells us about getting the right nutrients in your day.

“What are you hungry for? What’s going to scratch that satisfaction piece of nutrition, while we’re also scratching the nutrition side of filling your plate? So there’s nutrition, and then there’s satisfaction. And if you’re never thinking about the satisfaction, and you’re just eating chicken, broccoli, rice everyday because you think that’s healthy, that’s not going to sustain those habits long term, because you’re going to get bored,” says Amy Culp, who is the President of the Collegiate & Professional Sports Dietetics Association, Director of Sports Performance Nutrition for the Texas Longhorns Athletic Department, Assistant AD for Performance Nutrition at University of Texas, and Yancy’s wife!

Today Yancy and Jarod talk with Amy about meal planning and getting the right nutrients in your diet. In this episode, you’ll learn:

- How to keep energy high and preparing for performance
- What do you have a taste for?
- Starting simple to be a high performer
- Nutrition doesn’t have to be complicated, and it can be fun!

Joe asks Adam Alter, “Do you think they recognize that this is unhealthy, but do it anyway?”

“Yeah. We know that. We know that because they've been interviewed and they say, they've said, a number of them, 'We are sort of agnostic about consumer well-being and consumer welfare. We don't really-- we're not trying to hurt people, but also it's not our primary aim. Our primary aim is to ensure that you spend as many minutes of the day on the screen as possible. And if you do that, we'll consider it a success.'”

In this episode, we take advice from the experts and how to focus our attention on the things we want instead of what we’re naturally drawn to, our phones. In this episode you’ll learn about…

- Extracting your best phone habits and leaving the worst habits behind
- Being more aware, moment by moment, of how we’re using our attention
- Hacking back your attention from external distractions

“I took notice to some of the other dads, and I saw that as soon as life, you know, quote unquote, life happens, they just stopped everything, aside from work and sitting down. Meaning they stopped being fit, they stopped trying to be strong. They stopped trying to develop themselves, not just physically, but mentally…They just let it go,” says Zach Even Esh, founder of The Underground Strength Gym.

In this episode, the third and final part of our New Year Motivation series, we’re taking advice on how to find success without giving up on your vision. In this episode you’ll learn about…

- Confirmation bias: knowing when your leaning the wrong direction on something and identify when your latching onto info that is holding you back
- You have to have a vision, a vision strong enough to succeed while knowing there’s no safety net. Don’t give up, but you have to adjust to the course
- Learning from unsuccessful actions
- Building momentum

“The thing about negative thoughts, though, is that they can become barriers to us moving forward and achieving the things that we want, when we listen to them. Negative thoughts are a bit, a little bit like seeds, right? We plant them in our brain. But if we attend to them, right? And if we water them through that attention, they will grow and they will spread. So we actually want to work on some different skills, where we take the negative thoughts and we shift them, or transform them, or we move away from them altogether,” says Dr. Lara Pence, Spartan’s Chief Mind Doctor.

In this episode, we look back to some great episodes for help dealing with negative thoughts so we’re prepared going into the New Year. We look to Sal Di Stefano, Nate Carr, and Dr. Lara Pence to help us fight our demons. In this episode you’ll learn…

- Impact of training with a negative mindset of yourself instead of a negative one
- You don’t invite negative thoughts, they just come in. Prepare and train yourself for them
- NO means “Next opportunity”
- Counter-thinking negative thoughts, acknowledging they are only thoughts, and removing judgment about the thought

You can build your capacity for attention and focus, just like you build your muscles. Today's guest Dr. Amishi Jha is a professor of psychology at the University of Miami and is the Director of Contemplative Neuroscience for the Mindfulness Research and Practice Initiative, which she co-founded in 2010. Her work has been featured at NATO, the World Economic Forum, and The Pentagon. She joins Joe De Sena, founder & CEO of Spartan, to explain how you can use simple focus exercises, like push ups for the brain, to strengthen your attention, focus, and mental resilience.

The Food Babe, Vani Hari, lived on soda, fast food, and processed food (the typical American diet.) It landed her in a hospital. That's when the research on food ingredients, additives, and chemicals that became "the Food Babe" began. Vani and Joe De Sena, founder and CEO of Spartan, share a passion for clean food, even when it has become socially difficult.   At the end of the interview, Vani shares a surprising tip for a better diet - turn of the TV!

Sleep is the platform that all good health sits upon, says Dr. Kirk Parsley. A Navy SEAL who became an MD "Doc Parsley" found that almost all the high-performing patients he worked with had sleep issues. The more he studied it, the more he found out about the importance of sleep for resilience and performance. Today he talks with Joe De Sena, Spartan founder, and CEO, who has always said "I'll sleep when I'm dead." Dr. Parsley lectures worldwide on sleep, wellness, and hormonal optimization and is currently completing a book on sleep and health optimization.

“You don’t want it to just be challenging for the most capable person in your formation, because then you’re going to crush everybody below them and they’re gonna feel awful. And you don’t want to just make it challenging for the less capable folks in your formation, because then you’re not going to challenge the folks up high. You have to consistently work to identify how you can make the experience one that elevates everyone, hopefully simultaneously,” says Chandler Smith, former Army Captain, 4-Year West Point Wrestler, and 3x Crossfit Games athlete.

Today Yancy and Jarod talk with Chandler Smith about trying to find balance in life, finding the right environment, and elevating yourself and other people along the way. In this episode, you’ll learn:

- Just because you’re having a bad day doesn’t mean you should make it bad for someone else

- You’re open to more pain when dedicated to something

- There’s no losses in life if you believe in what you’re doing

“But then after these events that you see as only having negative outcomes occur, after they happen, you can, oftentimes, look back and be like, 'Alright well that actually ended up being something that forced me to think about things in a completely different way, that challenged me and made me a lot better.' And that's how I view that now. Like, without the finger thing happening, I definitely don't make the Crossfit Games in 2019 and probably don't end up figuring out the rest of my Army career, as far as how to relate it to fitness... So I'm really lucky, I think, that it happened,” says Chandler Smith, former Army Captain, 4-Year West Point Wrestler, and 3x Crossfit Games athlete.

Today Yancy and Jarod talk with Chandler Smith about how having pain exposed has helped him be a better athlete and a better human being. In this episode, you’ll learn:

- Learning to suffer on the path to success, and not expecting success to just happen out of nowhere

- You can find positives in everything, even after losing part of a finger

- You need to recognize your weaknesses and realize you will not always be the best at what you do

“It’s that important. It’s like, basically you approach recovery as if it’s like your most important workout of the week, but you do it everyday, probably,” says Nicole Mericle.

Spartan Up Endurance Series host, Johnny Waite, talks with Nicole Mericle about her recovery from tearing her ACL, and how we can find the mindset to recover and come back better than before. In this episode you’ll learn about…

  • Focusing on what you can control yourself during each step of recovery
  • Approaching recovery the same way as training, and how athletes need to treat recovery more importantly than their workouts
  • Learning from previous and current injuries
  • Having the necessary support and reinforcement from those around you during recovery
  • The obstacles you think are the easiest are the ones you’re more likely to get hurt on

“...To know that it’s okay to fail, basically. Because if you don’t fail...it’s okay to not always succeed, because if you succeeded all the time, then you’d have no reason to try harder,” says Matt Segal, professional climber.

This week’s classic episode will help you find the advantages in failure in all aspects of life. We look to Howard Chang and Matt Segal to give us their knowledge. In this episode you’ll learn…

  • Seeking discomfort to make other aspects of life easier, like dealing with humiliation and defeat
  • Fail, pick yourself up, rebuild - this creates resilience
  • Training for adversity for your life
  • Being able to look back on a failure and be inspired to succeed on your next opportunity
  • If you set yourself up for failure and fail, you won’t keep your desire. But, if you set yourself up for success and fail, you have motivation to try harder

“The work should not be on the individual to figure out how to be healthy. We should show up for them to show them, in all ways, how to be healthy. Whether it’s movement, whether it’s eating, whether it’s sleeping, whether it’s-- you know, if you’ve got to see a doctor, then why should you have to see four different specialists? And then, have to like, navigate this very difficult system to get all of this coordinated care,” says Marcus Filly, 6x CrossFit Games athlete, expert fitness coach, and founder of Functional Bodybuilding.

Today, with Marcus Filly, we talk about how positively you can impact others lives by helping them in fitness and how getting into coaching helped Marcus personally change his life. In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • Dealing with confidence and switching professions
  • Growing as a coach, athlete, and business owner all at once
  • It’s hard to make a living in fitness, so you better love it and have good “Bedside Manner”
  • Re-consider what you think success is, and every day, do something that will help you in the future

What can Spartans learn about high performance from professional baseball? Brandon Guyer spent seven years as a Major League Baseball outfielder, now he coaches athletes and he's trying his hand at Spartan Races. In the Spartan Up podcast interview, he tells Joe De Sena (founder and CEO of Spartan) how he got to that elite level and his advice for you.

Guyer spent seven years as an elite professional athlete. He's extremely competitive and driven, and when he decides to commit to something, he goes all-in. So when he decided to sign up for his Spartan race, he didn't do it to have fun or try something new. He did it to win.

Today we take our quest for resilience to the next level with data-backed insights from George Bonnano, Professor of Clinical Psychology at Columbia University where he heads the Loss, Trauma, and Emotion Lab which has studied resilience in the face of extreme adversity for 25 years. He's the author of the new book "The End of Trauma: How the New Science of Resilience Is Changing How We Think About PTSD."

In this episode Joe De Sena, founder and CEO of Spartan, asks Bonnano the ultimate questions about resilience - what’s it made up of and how can we get it?

George A. Bonanno, Ph.D. is a Professor of Clinical Psychology at Columbia University. His research has for over 25 years centered on defining and documenting resilience in the face of loss or potential traumatic events, including disaster, loss, terrorist attack, bio-epidemic, traumatic injury, life-threatening injuries medical events, and military deployment, and on investigating the role of flexible responding in predicting psychopathological and resilient outcomes. He was honored recently with the Cattell award from the Association for Psychological Science “for a lifetime of intellectual achievements in applied psychological research and their impact on a critical problem in society at large.”

“So for all you leaders out there, let this pull you to the edge of your seat.  When you pull up to work, or when you get ready to hit ‘play’ on the Zoom, or go live on the Zoom or Google Hangout, you need to say, ‘Wait a second, am I ready to win the caring game, today, with the people that are helping make me and this organization look good?’  And if not, you better take thirty seconds and say, ‘I gotta get my s*** straight, because it’s not straight right now,’” says Yancy Culp, co-host of the DEKA Series Podcast.

Spartan Up Podcast, DEKA Series hosts Jarod Cogswell and Yancy Culp get passionate about what makes a good leader and how that impacts your team. In this episode you’ll learn:

Coach Frank McKinney, one of the first Black college rugby coaches in the US, says "I didn't get into coaching to win games.  My thing is to make young men better."  It turns out those are also the ingredients of a winning team.

Joe De Sena, founder and CEO of Spartan, interviews coach Frank McKinney and critically acclaimed filmmaker Thomas Morgan about the new film "Scrum" and the incredible story behind it.

Listen for the inspiring story, or for coach Frank's great coaching advice and insights.  "I tell the players, the kind of dog I need is the dog that's in the junkyard, with the tire swing in the old Roy dog food. And he has a little bit of water. You don't want to put your hand through that fence. But the border collie you put your hand through the fence and pet. So I tell the kids no matter where they come from, I need junkyard dogs out there playing that's for us to be successful for us to win. You've got to be a junkyard dog on the field, in the classroom and in life."

He strives to bring diversity to a predominantly white Southern institution through recruiting athletes from marginalized communities. Coach McKinney is an advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion within higher education and uses his position as a rugby coach to create opportunities, mentorship, and resources for at-risk youth to help them see themselves access and succeed in college and beyond.

“The original goal was to try to become the first NFL player to ever climb the Seven Summits, and when that got pushed out a year, I said, ‘You know what? I’m going to double down. And I’m going to not only go up and climb Mt. Everest, I’m going to come back down, and then I’m going to go up the other side,’ which is Lhotse, the fourth highest mountain in the world. And, at the end of the day, that didn’t happen because I would have died on Lhotse,” says Mark Pattison, former NFL player who just conquered the Seven Summits.

Mark Pattison has played professional football, is an Executive at Sports Illustrated, and the 1st NFL player to climb the Seven Summits. In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • Competitive greatness
  • Having a “big hairy audacious goal”
  • Healing by being connected with nature
  • Adjusting to the elements to reach a goal instead of changing the goal

On top of all this, he has a documentary presented by NFL 360 coming out TONIGHT, 9/23, “doors” open at 7:30 PM Central Time, and the film starts at 8:00.

When it feels like all hope is lost, how do you come back? Heard of the "Varsity Blues" college admission scandal? Have you asked yourself what happened next? How a family recovers? What’s next after jail after losing his career? That’s what Joe De Sena  and Gordon Caplan talk about in this second half of their interview.

Gordon Caplan was one of those parents, and he tells Joe De Sena (CEO & Founder of Spartan) exactly what he was thinking, and what he learned from the experience and the deep thinking he did in jail. Every parent of a high school-age kid, and grandparents ... and anyone who works with them in school needs to listen closely to the lessons here.  In part one of this interview, you'll hear what exactly happened, how it happened, why it happened, and what is wrong with the way 90% of the parents out there are thinking about their kids.  Next week we publish part two, that's where you'll hear you can come back from even the most devastating blow.

And they’re like, ‘Well, we don’t have a choice, I can’t afford a boat, I need to eat, my family needs to eat,’” says Levison Wood, explorer who walked almost the entire Nile River in one go.

We’re continuing our Classics with some conversations that tell us about the uncharted places in the world that many of us haven’t even considered visiting. These explorers literally risked their lives to do what they’ve accomplished. In this episode you’ll learn…

“Well you know, this was a man who, at the time, I was contemplating, ‘How do I stop today? I can’t move on, I can’t get to the end. I have a fractured leg, something’s wrong. I’m in so much pain. How can I possibly get to land’s end?’ And then you get this card… what do you do? I did what anybody else would do and I made a promise to that lady that I would get to the other side,” says Tony the Fridge.

We’re back with two more awesome throwbacks. We kick it off first with Chris Legh, you may remember him stumbling across the finish line at the 1997 Hawaii Ironman. His story is amazing when you hear the mentality he had during that infamous race. The second half is Dr. Delle’s heartwarming and inspiring conversation with Tony “The Fridge,” someone who literally runs with a fridge on his back to raise money for cancer research. In this episode you’ll learn…

  • How your mind and spirit can push your body past its limits
  • The importance of pushing through for others
  • Live in the moment and stay focused. You can do anything if you put your mind to it. Can you carry a fridge the length of England? YES!

Joe De Sena, founder and CEO of Spartan, talks to the authors of "The Plant Based Athlete," Matt Frazier (founder of the No Meat Athlete community) and Robert Cheeke (vegan bodybuilder) and the how and why of eating more plants.  Find out what Joe and these experts have to say about the protein hoax, and an easy first step to getting more plants in your diet.

More about Matt Frazier - he’s a vegan ultrarunner, best known as the founder of the No Meat Athlete movement and author of The No Meat Athlete Cookbook. Matt found he could run faster and longer when he began eating a plant-based diet, and qualified for the Boston Marathon and completed his first 100-mile ultramarathon soon after doing so. Matt Frazier: @nomeatathlete_official

More about Robert Cheeke -he’is a champion vegan bodybuilder and the founder of Vegan Bodybuilding & Fitness. He is the author of Shred It! and Plant-Based Muscle, and is a contributor to No Meat Athlete, Forks Over Knives, Vegan Strong, and other popular websites. “You know, I’m sure you’ve heard that old adage of, I guess it’s credited to Winston Churchill, when he gets up to speak about accomplishment...three lines he says, ‘Never give up. Never give up. Never give up.’ And I think that, without question, is the key,” says Will Roseman, Executive Director of the legendary Explorer’s Club.

In this episode, we take a look back at two original Spartan Up! interviews published in 2015.  The episode begins with Will Roseman telling Joe De Sena the stories of the legendary members of the Explorer’s Club, and ends with Dr. Delle’s conversation with Sir Ranulph Fiennes, the world’s greatest living explorer. In this episode you’ll learn…

  • The importance of perseverance and assessing risk (Apollo 13)
  • The outside of the box thinking and extraordinary knowledge that explorers have (Fighting a leopard, hunting a man eating tiger, using feces as a chisel)
  • Overcoming fear (Even the world’s greatest explorer is afraid of heights)
  • How Sir Ranulph Fiennes, without doctors, survived a heart attack during a climb on Everest and later cut off his own fingers at his home
  • To surmount obstacles, have a cup of tea and figure out how to go around them.

“...Weight loss is hard, you know? There’s so much information out there telling you how you should live your life, to lose weight. So many fad diets, it’s pretty hard to sift through. But I would say the most important thing, and running has also taught this to me, is you need to fuel your body for the life you live,” says Kyle White, running enthusiast who has lost 185 pounds over the pandemic and through a grueling Eastern Canada winter.

Filling in for Johnny Waite while he’s organizing Spartan races in Canada, guest Spartan Up Endurance series host Sarah Goldman talks with Kyle White about his amazing weight loss journey and how he has continued to push himself from being over 400 pounds to planning marathons. In this episode you’ll learn about…

- Learning to like the challenges in fitness
- Advantages of training in the winter
- How to stay motivated and inspired
- How losing weight leads to changes in other aspects of life
- Having the necessary attitude for endurance, understanding what your body needs, and how it reacts

Kyle White is an inspiration for anyone who is looking to lose weight or reconnect to their love for running.

“When you exercise, your brain is receiving signals from your body that really tell you who you are and what you’re capable of. So when we talk about exercise boosting confidence or being empowering, sometimes we think about it very abstractly, but I think about it very literally,” says Kelly McGonigal, PhD.
Kelly McGonigal is an award-winning Stanford lecturer, health psychologist, author, and public speaker. We continue our conversation, but this time about resilience relating to happiness and positivity. In this episode, you’ll learn:
• How feeling connected and having something to offer to your community builds compassion, happiness, and resilience

• Why working out in a group is shown to be the best for improving your mood

• Finding empowerment through exercise to figure out what you’re capable of and to build resilience

• Having pure intentions when coaching others

• No matter how bad your day is going, anyone taking the time to listen to you may be having it worse, so show up for them!

“Listen, some people are whooped right now. Wag your tail, find what's good in your life. Find gratitude, what's going on. Write it down. Because the one thing, when I come home, good day or bad day, and there are days that are bad and I'm tired and everything else, or come home from a trip and it didn't go the way I wanted, or back's hurting or something like that. Guess what? I'm coming home to a waggin' tail,” says Todd Durkin, Motivational Speaker, Personal Trainer, Best Selling Author and Life Transformer.

Jarod and TD went a bit off topic during the Life Fueled by Fitness series and talked about some other essential practices we need to be utilizing everyday.  JC and Yancy also give us a great rundown on how Todd actually walks the talk.  This episode is about finding those things to be grateful for and to “wag your tail” no matter the circumstances.  In this episode, you’ll learn about:

  • Getting your energy flowing and getting juiced up

  • Following your dreams

  • The value of time

  • Being the hardest worker in the room

  • And last but not least, always wag your tail

“For me, for the younger guys, I don't care where you're from. If you're an Iowa guy, right, we 'don't like each other,' but as soon as you get on my team, you're on my team. Right? I want to take care of you. And so that's what's exciting for the young guys that want to come in and fight is that, you know, wrestlers are gonna look out for each other. It doesn't matter where you're from. All that's done, behind us. It'd be fun to see these guys, see more guys that don't want to be done competing, and also don't want to wrestle, come over and start climbing the ranks in the MMA world,” says Logan Storley, #4 Ranked Bellator Welterweight and 4X All American for University of Minnesota.

Spartan Up Combat Series host, Ryan Warner, talks with Logan Storley about taking the leap from wrestling into MMA. In this episode you’ll learn...

  • How Logan transitioned from wrestling to MMA

  • There's no need to burn out your kids on a single sport when they're young

  • If you want to make a career out of combat but don’t want to keep wrestling, switch to MMA

  • Don’t overlook any person or any move

  • Wrestling programs and fan bases are expanding, we talk about some ways to get more people involved in the sport. Why aren’t there as many wrestling fans as MMA fans?

Logan “Storm” Storley is a top contender in the Welterweight division at Bellator, and he has a long history of wrestling and MMA going back to before he was in college.  He has trained with legends like Tony Ferguson, Robbie Lawler, Brock Lesnar, and many of the best from the University of Minnesota.  He is a fighter for Sanford MMA, coached by Greg Jones and Henri Hooft.

Olympian Kyle Dake is living his dream - it's been a long journey but today, August 4th 2021 he's competing on the Olympic stage. We're taking a look back at what brought him here. What made him the competitor he is today? Today we're replaying an interview from 2014 so you can see what drove this Olympian. It's a mix of positivity, focus and drive.

“I don’t think about losing. I think about winning every time I step on the mat. I imagine myself wrestling the greatest wrestler of all time and beating him every single day. That’s just how  I get myself better every single day,” says Kyle Dake, Team USA 74 kg wrestler and 4x NCAA Champion.

Today’s episode is a throwback to an interview that Joe did with Kyle in 2014. Kyle, at this time, was striving to be the greatest. It’s amazing to see how far he has come by living with these expectations and standards he holds for himself. Wednesday, August 4, 2021, is his Olympic debut.

In this episode, you’ll learn…

• The impact Kyle’s parents had on him, and his eventual decision to live by their values on his own
• Taking action to excel and committing to being the best
• No matter what your work or practice, find something to be happy about
• “You can only lose when you quit.”
• Pushing through what you think are the hardest times so you can keep pushing the “wall” holding you back

Save the fun for later, don’t be afraid to get in the ring, don’t fear discomfort - it’s all familiar advice but did you expect it from the founder of Click Funnels the sales funnel software giant?  It turns out that success in one arena shares traits with other arenas.  Russell Brunson tells Joe stories of his backyard training as a kid, where it led him, and how he’s returning to those roots today.

Over the past 19 years, Russell has built a following of over a million entrepreneurs, sold hundreds of thousands of copies of his books (making him a New York Times Bestselling Author), popularized the concept of sales funnels, and co-founded the software company called ClickFunnels that helps tens of thousands of entrepreneurs quickly get their message out to the marketplace.

“I don’t think it’s a real, like, settling thought to most people that, you know, you’re going to go to the hospital and leave with less than what you came with,” says John Kuchinski, an astounding blind athlete who has persevered through obstacles many people would consider unthinkable.

Spartan Up Combat Series host, Ryan Warner, speaks with John Kuchinski about how he has pushed through the situations that have redefined his life. In this episode you’ll learn about...

  • John waking up blind after surgery and having to adjust to everyday life to be independent

  • Starting wrestling in 8th grade after going blind and later getting into judo, where he trained under Jeff Friedlis Sensei at Michigan State University

  • How John lost his legs and still continued to go to the dojo. Training for something other than just getting healthy

“See, dreams ignite inspiration in your heart. And inspiration is different than motivation. As most of us know, inspiration is inspired. In spirit, inspire means in spirit. So if you could ignite your spirit, and all of a sudden now, it's like you're ignited by a dream to feel a certain way, or get out of pain, physically or mental pain” says Todd Durkin, Motivational Speaker, Personal Trainer, Best Selling Author and Life Transformer.

Yancy is on the road, so Spartan Up Podcast, DEKA Series host Jarod Cogswell is joined by Todd Durkin to wrap up the final episode of the new 4 part mini-series, Winning the Mind Game.  During this mini-series, the guys will address overall well-being and how to unlock the doors holding us back in our minds. When do you take risks, when do you play it safe?  It turns out it's not one or the other.  Sukhinder Singh Cassidy talks with Spartan founder and CEO Joe De Sena about the importance of risk-taking, and suggests using a series of choices and risks to create better outcomes.

One simple formula - if your FOMO is bigger than your fear of failure, you're going to take action.  If your fear of failure is greater than your FOMO you're not going to take action.  To overcome this, Sukhinder Singh Cassidy suggests steps to reduce the fear of failure.

Sukhinder Singh Cassidy is a leading technology executive and entrepreneur, board member, and investor with twenty-five years of experience founding and helping to scale companies, including Google and Amazon. Most recently, she served as president of StubHub and as a member of eBay’s executive leadership team. She is the founder and chairman of theBoardlist and author of Choose Possibility.

“It's not wrestlers that have done well in MMA or are doing well in MMA. That is historically false. It is American wrestlers. Specifically because of the takedown. Knowing to hold a man down against his will, or vice versa, you get taken down, force it to get up and get free with a guy on top of you who's a trained killer who doesn't want you free. The standup and the ride is what separates. That's the toughness,” says Chael Sonnen, UFC Light Heavyweight and Middleweight championship contender and NCAA Division I All-American.

Spartan Up Combat Series host, Ryan Warner, talks with Chael Sonnen about reaching greatness and maximizing your career in combat sports. In this episode you’ll learn...

  • How Chael got into wrestling, and then pankration, the original MMA

  • The importance of having a great coach like Matt Lindland and ditching the stigma against Greco

  • If Chael thinks any rules should be changed in freestyle or folkstyle

  • How to market yourself as a wrestler

As a kid did you run around for the fun of it? You were probably stronger than you think. Can you get back in touch with that feeling? Who needs motivation when you are just having a great time? Barefoot Ted was one of the unintentional stars of Christopher Mcdougal's book "Born to Run," and the originator of Luna Sandals.

Spartan Up Endurance Series host, Johnny Waite, talks with Barefoot Ted about how we can get outside and be happy with whatever fitness you choose out there. In this episode you’ll learn about:

The adventure that showed Ted the kind of life he wanted to live
How to get back to the fundamental roots of exercise
Learn to take advantage of your natural tools
Why experimenting is the key to your fitness
Micro-Dosing exercise
The difference between practice & performance

“There's practice, which is much more about just this daily hygienic care of yourself. That should be relatively easy to stay in, because it's self-- it's self satisfying. Performance sometimes takes a kind of discipline, self-discipline, maybe scheduling, some much more analytical and somewhat rigid sort, if you want to get the results that performance will give you. Practice is ultimately leading, its only goal is wellbeing,” says Ted McDonald, aka Barefoot Ted, from “Born to Run” and founder of Luna Sandals.

In 2014 this conversation with Richard Branson was one of Joe De Sena's first Spartan Up interviews. Branson explained why he had the vision to travel to space.  At the time he expected to make the journey by the end of that year. We all know a few months later many expected Branson to give up on the dream.

This is an interview about character, resilience, grit, and fitness.  What is it about Richard Branson that allowed him to see this mission through?  They say success leaves clues, what clues can you find in this 2014 conversation?

“Stop worrying about what other people think about you. You know, those very first steps you take, as a runner, when you feel stupid, when you feel you have no right to be there, you’re maybe feeling...you’re in kind of baggy running kit, and overweight, and don’t really know what you’re doing. And you’re so paranoid that people are going to see you. I know women that have gone running in the dark, to start with, because they didn’t want anyone else to see,” says Dr. Juliet McGrattan, award-winning author and Founder of 261FearlessClubUK.

Spartan Up Podcast, DEKA Series hosts’ Jarod Cogswell and Yancy Culp take their next step with part 2 of their new 4 part mini-series, Winning the Mind Game.  During this mini-series, the guys will address overall well-being and how to unlock the doors holding us back in our minds. This episode is about being bold. In this episode you’ll learn about:

  • Juliet’s journey: Leaving behind medicine and her career as a General Practitioner to focus on her passion of running, while still helping people live healthily

  • People’s transformations of confidence and fitness through the initiatives of 261 Fearless

  • Differences between men and women dissolving when it comes to endurance

  • Digging deep to find out why you want to run in the first place and staying consistent

  • Juliet’s top 3 lessons on creating your own legacy

“Usually, everything that I’ve done, someone’s probably done before me, and I would like to be the person that sets the bar for the next one. I know, every time I put a weight on my back, that somebody has lifted that before. I’m not the first person. And I know that if I set the world record in it, someone’s going to break it. So I better set it high,” says Hunter McIntyre, the Bulk Pony, 6x OCR World Champion, 4x OCR National Champion, Tough Mudder X Undefeated Champion 2017-2018.

Spartan Up Endurance Series host, Johnny Waite, talks with Hunter about how we can do better to continuously push ourselves to the next level, even those who haven’t started yet. In this episode you’ll learn about…

  • Hunter’s toughest racing experience
  • Having the mentality to use the stairs instead of the escalator
  • How to keep your momentum once you get started
  • Always training with people better than yourself
  • Being prepared to get knocked down at any moment
