We all know that self-control is important, but few of us know how to actually develop it. Joe De Sena, founder & CEO of Spartan, asks Professor Roy Baumeister, an expert in the field of self-control, how to build this essential muscle. Self-control or willpower - is about habit-forming and setting yourself up for success. Professor Baumeister's advice is simple but effective: start small, set goals, and be consistent. By following his advice, you can develop the self-control you need to achieve your goals.

Professor Roy Baumeister is a world-renowned psychologist who has spent his career researching self-control. In his work, he has found that self-control functions like a muscle - the more you exercise it, the stronger it becomes. This research has profound implications for our understanding of human behavior, and can help us all to live better, more productive lives.

Here are the steps you need to follow to also get self-control and discipline.:

  1. Do something hard every day to exercise your self-control muscle
  2. Keep track of your progress and reward yourself for meeting goals
  3. Make your goals public to add social pressure and accountability

"Self-control works like a muscle. So if you exercise it, it gradually gets stronger, and it's sort of one basic muscle that you use for everything."

Native American author, speaker, and veteran DJ Vanas is the author of "The Warrior Within," a book about the importance of service, discipline, and courage.

Joe De Sena, founder & CEO of Spartan Race, asked DJ Vanas what he believes makes a great Warrior.

"Someone who leads by example, and at the end of the day, somebody who has dedicated their life to service, to their tribe, to their people. It's all about making a contribution. That's what the warrior role comes from. And it transcends age, race, gender, and stage of life. These principles that I share in the book are available for anybody willing to take on the call."

In this interview, Joe De Sena and DJ Vanas talk about what rites of passage are now and what they should be, how young men are currently struggling and how to overcome that, the role of a warrior in the community, how warriors are more like ants than eagles, and the 5 things you should do to become a true warrior.

When the US abruptly left Afghanistan a group of veterans took matters into their own hands to rescue their Afghan allies and partners.

"What does a promise mean to you? And how far would you go to honor it?"

Lt. Col. Scott Mann (ret) is a veteran and author of the New York Times bestseller “Operation Pineapple Express.” He is the founder of The Hero's Journey, a nonprofit that helps veterans and military family members connect to their story.

Scott talks with Joe De Sena (CEO & Founder of Spartan Race) about how the government abandoned the Afghan people and how this has led to what he calls “a great moral injury.”  He explains the challenges veterans and their Afghan Special Operator friends and partners are now facing.

Scott talks about the young man, Nazam, who was passenger number one on the Pineapple Express. He was shot through the face on a patrol with US. Special Forces because he turned to warn the patrol that they were walking up on Taliban.

Scott wanted the narrative of the book to be storytelling first and foremost, not a military book, not an intelligence analysis. He interviewed dozens and dozens of people, including some senior level people in the US. Military, intelligence professionals.

Anxiety is pervasive, but not all anxiety is bad.  That's what Tracy Dennis-Tiwary, Ph.D. has determined after 20 years of research.

Anxiety is not an illness to be avoided. Anxiety is an emotion that can serve us. That's why all the medications and self help books continue to fail us. (quick note - anxiety disorders are real, but anxiety is not the same thing as an anxiety disorder.)

Gilbert has endured great suffering in his life, but his message is of joy! Burundian long-distance runner, author, and motivational speaker is a survivor of the massacres during the Burundian Civil War of the early 1990s. Members of the Hutu tribe invaded Tuhabonye's high school and captured more than 100 Tutsi children and teachers killing most with machetes; the rest were burned alive. Joe Gray says, “What are the elite athletes doing? If you're looking to set elite goals for yourself, I don't care if you're a five hour marathoner and you want to run a 4:30, you're trying to do something that you've never done before. You have performance on mind. One thing you'll always notice is you're not going to see a lot of low carb athletes in endurance sports at the top of the sport.”

Today, Yancy and Joseph Gray talk about how you can reach elite goals and live life and train like an elite athlete. Today, you’ll learn about:

- Finding what’s best for you instead of just what works for others
- Training at 38 vs 28 years old
- Importance of being selfless

Your brain evolved to prevent you from moving, to conserve energy, because there was a time when humans needed  a lot of energy to hunt and to gather food. We don't have to do that now, but the brain is still set up to conserve energy. But if you can overcome that resistance and MOVE you unlock the most powerful medicine in mental health.  This episode explains how exercise can improve focus, memory, depression, anxiety and sleep.  How much exercise you need to do.  And some simple recommendations to encourage the release of the chemicals your brain wants more of.

Joe De Sena, founder and CEO of Spartan is joined by Jennifer Heisz, PhD author “Move the Body, Heal the Mind” is an expert in brain health, associate professor in the Department of Kinesiology at McMaster University and directs the NeuroFit Lab.  Dr. Heisz's research examines the effects of physical activity on brain function to promote mental health and cognition.

Marla Sweeney, Heather Gollnick, Jimmy Binns are going to let you know how they keep doing what they do as they get older, and with their advice, you’ll be able to keep competing and having fun actively until your 80s, 90s, maybe even into your 100s. We had the help of Amelia Boone interviewing Marla, and Kevin Gillotti interviewing Heather.

Joe: Because they didn't want a 72 or 73 year old?

Jimmy Binns: I think a part of it was that they didn't want people thinking that anybody can walk in there and just go through the police academy.

Joe: But you would train.

Jimmy: Yeah, but I mean, it's a very vigorous and rigorous program. You know, ain't nobody walking in there and completing it, trust me, unless you really are motivated.

In this episode, you’ll learn:

- How to run Spartan Races in your 70s
- With competitive age comes wisdom IF you listen to your body
- How Jimmy was able to complete the Police Academy at the age of 73

Hans Florine says, “That's what climbing is, is doing something that you couldn't previously do, whether it was last week or seconds ago. And so there's immediate reward in climbing for, 'Hey there's a problem in front of you, and it's just a problem.' And that's what life is. And we do something, change our body position, get another tool, and we move forward and we get past it.”

Today, Yancy and Jarod talk with Hans about reaching for goals you can’t accomplish yet, and how having fun means you're at your best. Today, you’ll learn about:

The people having the most fun are the best climbers
Go out and find things to do and challenge yourself, because you can
Finding something you can’t do, but want to do, and working and learning until you accomplish it

Hans Florine is a speed climber, professional speaker, author and thought leader in speed and efficiency. Hans has repeatedly set and broken one of the most coveted speed records in the world: The Nose of El Capitan, a 2,900-foot monolith in Yosemite Valley.

Feel a lack of motivation?  Find a problem that needs to be solved. Ryan joins Spartan Race founder and CEO Joe De Sena to talk about it. He enlisted in the Navy after watching the Twin Towers fall on 9/11, and Parrott served eight years as a U.S. Navy SEAL completing three combat tours to Iraq before being assigned to Advanced Training Command as an Instructor.

He saw the need for better burn care, he started Sons of the Flag. Today he sees a need for better physical education and he's starting the The Human Performance Project to dissect and share essentials of human physiology.

Meb Keflezighi, Jeffrey Zeizel, and Kathrine Switzer each have experiences at the Boston Marathon that would seem unthinkable if they didn’t happen.

Meb Keflezighi, the first American to win the boston Marathon after the tragic bombing, says, “In a marathon, you don’t break early. You know, you try to hold on, but sometimes you have to listen to your instincts and go for it. And I went for it. I was the fifteenth, or so, fastest guy in the race, but you know, you’ve got to do it that day, and I was so proud to be able to pull the victory for the United States.”

In this episode, you’ll learn:

- How Meb’s family embodying the American dream led to his glorious victory
- Jeffrey’s experience being in the Marathon when the bomb went off and how he managed his situation
- The lead up, the incident, and the after effects of Kathrine Switzer’s historical run where she was attacked by an official

Hans Florine talking about when he broke his legs 4 years ago, “I was out of view when I fell and broke my leg. He came around the corner and I was talking on the phone. And he's like, "What the F are you doing talking on the phone?" And I'm like, I'm talking to the Rangers. Why are you talking Rangers? We need a rescue. I've broken both of my legs, and he's just like, you you know, couldn't you, like, cry or scream or do something first before you just get to business of fixing it... I think he's one of the people who just said, like, I just started doing what I could do.”

Today’s kids are smarter and stronger than our culture gives them credit for. Kids need independence to learn the skills they’ll need as adults.

After her column "Why I Let My 9 Year Old Ride the Subway Alone" created a media firestorm, Lenore Skenazy founded the book, blog and movement, “Free-Range Kids.” Today she is president of Let Grow, the nonprofit making it easy, normal and legal to give kids back some independence.

Brice Johnson, Project Manager and Site Foreman at The Jericho Project, says, “Our form of spirituality is when you're doing so good, the next man is going to come up to you and ask you how you're doing that. No matter if it's cooking, in the gym at work, doing your homework, even folding your bed or doing your laundry. When the next man comes up and asks you, how are you doing that? That's our form of spirituality here.”

Brice has been through a lot to get where he’s at today, and he’s made it his mission to help others like himself be the version of their self that they strive to be.

Today, Yancy and Jarod talk with Brice about really wanting to be better and how you can focus on yourself. In this episode, you’ll learn:

- You have to be dedicated to get better yourself, commit to yourself
- Find the right support system
- Be accountable and don't let negativity spread
- Don’t let the people around you quit on themselves

Chuck Etchison founded the Jericho project after 20 years of heroin addiction and incarceration. Spartan Up host Johnny Waite was at our trail race, the Golden Gate classic in San Francisco, back in November. There was a group of guys, about 30 of them, all there to volunteer. He said these were interesting guys, these are hard guys, you could tell that they'd spent some time in trouble. But Johnny said he'd never seen such friendly, helpful, engaging, enthusiastic people. 30 of them did the work of 300. One of them told him about the Jericho project, that these are all guys who've been in prison, all guys who'd had addiction issues, all guys were on a track to spend the rest of their life doing that. But they all ended up in Chuck's program called the Jericho project.    www.jerichoprojectca.org

Frank Ferrante, Jeff Gomez, and JR Martinez have all had their own experiences rewriting their stories, and what they say will help you rewrite yours.

JR Martinez says, “I think that's what drives me to this day, is I want to be that old man on the rocking chair and I'm on the front porch one day, and not asking "What if? What if? what if?" I want to be the guy that said, "I tried it. I didn't probably complete it, but at least I gave it a shot," you know? And that's what matters more than anything. You have to ask yourself, the question is, whatever you're unhappy about, is this what you want your life to become?”

In this episode, you’ll learn:

- Find where you belong. Life is not linear
- Don’t let your past dictate who you’re going to be
- Acknowledge what is holding you back in life and confront it instead of ignoring it
- First 2 chapters of your life are written for you, you get to write the rest

- Circadian rhythm and metabolism. Getting a jumpstart from cordisol, using natural cycles for the best metabolism

“The good doctors are out there prescribing exercise to people suffering with depression, anxiety, stress. It's an antidepressant, and I know the other thing that it does for me is it makes me feel more confident. Confidence breeds joy as well. It gives me more self-worth. It gives me a better self-image. And that always, that always happens after a workout,” says Jarod Cogswell, co-host of the DEKA Series and Co-Creator of Spartan DEKA.

Zach Even-Esh, Jimmy Chin, Rick Lamb, and Gabby Reece are going to help us become better parents, giving us advice and their own experiences as guidance to get our kids on the journey to greatness.

Retired Command Sergeant Major Rick Lamb says, “Family. That's what you're left with at the end of the day. You know, as the body fails, the brain fails, everything else. Like we were talking about earlier, you don't want to be that guy that's dying at the VA hospital with oatmeal dripping off your chin because nobody's going to visit you.”

Joe: “I like that! We're going to call that the oatmeal test.”

In this episode, you’ll learn:

- How to get your kids active and exercising
- Helping kids discover a passion where excellence is the only option
- Reconnecting with your kids after you’re distant from them for a while
- Don’t force your sport on your kids! Having fun and discovering new things is more important

Bruce Babashan, former senior-level corporate executive turned professional boxing trainer, says, “And if you stay lonely and you don't reach out, at least this is the way it is for me, I become drained. When I bring them in and I spend my time mentoring them, that's how I get my juice, but that's how I stay connected. But when I'm just grinding every day, I disconnect over time, and I tend to move towards the cynicism side of that continuum.”

Today, Yancy and Jarod talk with Bruce about avoiding being a cynic in your life and in doing the things you love, and making sure you have a romantic relationship with what you do. In this episode, you’ll learn:

- If you’re at your highest level, your greatest outcomes will naturally follow
- You’re not going to win off of schemes and plays, you need to have passion to push to the next level
- You have to work hard enough to feel bad about losing

Dr. Jen Welter, Coach Kevin Ward, and Dr. Jeff Karp are the people we need to listen to for advice to build the best team of people possible in all walks of life.

Dr. Jeff Karp says, “When you take someone who is outside the discipline, they start asking these basic questions that can actually break down those dogmas. And then you start questioning, you know, how the entire field was evolved. You know, like there's like this kind of framework and you start breaking down that framework and you realize that there's completely new ways of thinking that could be helpful. So I think just as a general kind of principle in life, it's, you know, surrounding yourself with people who have expertise and skills that you don't have.”

In this episode you’ll learn:

- Using diversity as a strength from Dr. Jen Welter
- Defining your culture with Coach Kevin Ward. How to maintain a team that wants to work and serve themselves
- Why Dr. Jeff Karp has multiple people from different backgrounds to bring a deeper understanding to all problems

Amanda Sullivan, Hannah Eden, and Marko Cheseto have experiences that will drive you to find strength and power from your life’s hardest moments.

“So what do you do in this instance? To our point previously, when you know you’re going in a bad direction, do you keep going down that way or do you try and make that pivot, and go, “Shxt, I’ve got to do something positive here.” And be an example, I guess, to the rest of the world, and try and use something negative and turn it into something positive,” says Hannah Eden.

In this episode, you’ll hear about:

How Amanda Sullivan turned around her mindset from being suicidal to being her own hero after being hit by two cars.
How Hannah Eden’s “joke” turned life changing experience with one of her best friends got her to do more for her community and herself
Marko Cheseto’s mindset of being so happy about every new step he made after losing his legs, and always thinking of how much better he can and will get

Doug Lewis, Olympian and former World Cup alpine ski racer, says, “...And they were powder skiing. Like, I had powder skis, but they were poder skiing on race skis, which is a nightmare, on their day off. They are at the Olympics. They have trained 25-30 years for that week, and on a day off, where they could get hurt or whatever, they went powder skiing. And they were whooping and hollering, and they would fall, and we’d spray ‘em. And it was one of the best days ever, and I just think of that, that those guys chose the love of sport over saving their body, taking a day off, or whatever. And all of those are champions.”

Today, Yancy and Jarod talk with Doug about how the love of sport is the foundation of your skills, talents, and overall, how good you are at something. In this episode, you’ll learn:

- The difference between a goal and a dream
- Equipment and knowledge has gotten greater over the years, but the foundation of what makes a good athlete is still the same
- Don’t kill motivation. Building confidence like a muscle
- Find things that push you to new levels as a regular person
- Being able to give someone a breakthrough, which will snowball into success in whatever they choose down the road
- Think, why’d you get into it in the first place? Keep the love alive

Doug Lewis, Olympian and founder of Eliteam, is currently an alpine ski racing broadcast analyst, but he used to be a top competitor in the 1980s.  Doug was on the 1984 and 1988 Olympic Alpine Team, and 2 World Championship Teams in 1985 and 1987. At the 1985 World Championships, Doug won the bronze medal, which was the first ever World Championship medal for an American in downhill. He was the 1986 & 1987 U.S. Nationals National Downhill Champion. Inducted in 2002 VARA Ski Hall of Fame, 2007 US National Ski & Snowboard Hall of Fame, and 2019 Vermont Ski & Snowboard Hall of Fame.

Tom Bilyeu, Ray Ushikubo, and Brian Chontosh are here to tell us how we can build on being consistent.

“What if I broadened our idea of what consistency was, to include taking advantage of opportunity when you have it. Meaning, I might not have an opportunity to work out today. Well, let’s not hold it against me because everytime I do have an opportunity, I take it,” says Brian Chontosh.

In this episode, we talk about how to get consistent and keep your momentum with some great advice. In this episode you’ll learn about…

- Getting habitually better and getting pride out of your day
- Staying consistent when you don’t feel like it, because you know it makes you better
- Picking up where you left off instead of dreading what you did or didn’t get done

Doug Lewis, Olympian and former World Cup alpine ski racer, says, “If I could stand in the starting gate, 3,000 vertical feet above that finish, knowing that I am going to risk my life. But, if I had the confidence to push myself out there, and attack the course, more than I know the course is going to attack me, I have the upper hand on that course. And I know I can do it.”

Today, Yancy and Jarod talk with Doug about the mindset you must have to be the absolute best at whatever you’re trying to accomplish. In this episode, you’ll learn:

- Preparation and Visualization
- Recovering from a broken back at 17
- 3 traits of a World Class skier: Love for speed, work ethic, look at failure as a gift
- Finding the positivity in everything, regardless of the outcome
- Find what’s possible for yourself
- Figuring out what went right and wrong, and don’t shy away from looking at whoever is doing best to see what they’re doing better

“Find your inner beast, okay? Attack life. Punch fear in the face. It’s going to make you stronger. You know, be safe doing what you’re doing out there, we’re not talking about being reckless. But face your fears and punch through them. Man, the other side of it is such a beautiful place,” says Jarod Cogswell, co-host of the DEKA Series and Co-Creator of Spartan DEKA.

Today Yancy and Jarod are talking about how we can find that animal inside of us that we don’t know exists until we go through tough times. In this episode, you’ll learn about:

How to embrace the suffering and know that you can find what it takes to get through it
